TE-RU is the "standart" bent TE antenna. It can be installed on tail either pointing up or down</li><li>TE-DN is the double-head type of TE antenna. It can be installed either vertically either horizontally<br /></li></ul><p>It means the same glider can be flown in 5 differents TE Antenna configurations, for comparison purpose.</p><p>It is a bit difficult to judge from reading the instrument in flight what are the specificities for each arrangement. <p> </p><p>Recording pressure signals over the full flights overs the opportunity for wider analysis. are plotted, which are showing the flow direction right onto the skin.
Those lines are illustrating how much locally the airflow is being
"deformed" by fuselage presence, and in particular the way it is flowing
laterally in symetry plane when sideslip is present. <br /></p><p>We can consider that the friction line at one location on the glider is giving the orientation of yaw
string placed there - given a whool string is very thin compared to
glider size & very close to fuselage skin. With appropriate post processing, the angle of
friction lines versus glider symetry plane can be
numerically evaluated from CFD output, and used for further analysis<br /></p><p></p><p>CFD results in several condition have been considered, to characterize yaw string response to glider parameters. In a typical pull up on a modern glider, speed variation vs geometric altitude variation corresponds to a ~10m/s correction term, meaning <b><i>a 5% error on the coefficient makes ~0.5m/s error on variometer reading</i></b>.<br />As well to ne noted : when reaching low speed range, the antenna over-compensation behavior is increasing.<br /></p><p>In real life, TE pressure is exposed to many perturbations : turbulence, sideslip, angle of attack, pilot input, etc... Ideally the local pressure coefficient would stay imune to those parameter, but this is actually not the case. In thermals, probability for turbulence or for non symetric flight is higher, both likely to expose TE probe to undue perturbations. It was the classical LS6 trap : too slow on final approach with Landing flap configuration extended, resulting into nose up attitude in flare to compensate for quasi-stalled status, and tails hitting the ground first.<br /></p><p>During 2022 season, quite a lot of data was recorded using the XC vario installed on the LS6. I have taken here the opportunity to have a survey on glider parameters during some of the landings, with the objective to analyse the specific rough landing event.</p><p>In a first plot, indicated airspeed is plotted over the last 30 second before touch down, as well as the difference between airspeed & ground speed (hence vertical wind profile) in the last 60m above touch down. with temporary nose up attitude resulting in vertical speed reduction.<br />It constrasts with <span style="color: red;"><b>red</b></span>, for which nose up attitude just before touch down seems to have had no impact on vertical speed variation rate. Likely, quasi-stalled wing status due to lower speed/higher aoa in the last seconds prevented wing lift to develop further following to pitch action, preventing fine tuning of the vertical trajectory.<br /></li><li>Accelerometer is quite shaky once the glider is rolling, easily showing +2.7G reading whatever the landing : high values of positive Az does not correspond by itself to the feeling for a rough landing.<br />On the other hand, <b><span style="color: red;">red</span></b> curve shows at touch down a significantly negative reading (-2.7Gs) followed by a significant positive value (+3.1Gs). As a results, it is possible to plot temperature as function of pressure altitude. </p><p><br />Below are plotted a few time slices as recorded. With two other pilots, Jean-Luc & Guy-François, we are working on formulas & algorithms using those sensors to provide enhanced variometry measurement.<p>As a first step, Jean-Luc & Guy-François have created a fork from XCVario software, that is providing in particular the emission on Bluetooth for parameters of interest, that can be recorded by a smartphone. Over the season, I could record more than a ten of flight hour on my LS6 glider, that can be analysed on over the winter. A typical 5hrs flight results into ~30Mo of text file. For analysis purpose I use Scilab cripts (open source cousin for Matlab...), but Guy François has also developped his own post processing program.</p><p>Looking into this recorded material is providing interesting insight into the condition encountered while flying. Its needle agility is good to find small thermal, but he thing is it's behavior is in no way quantative, and it is almost unsensitive to sink so that not really usable for speed to fly (in case on flat battery).<br />
<br />
So, with the use of a large syringe, I did some comparative studies of Sage vario & winter, with various configuration of restrictions installed on tubes. Here is the result.<br />

Not in this alps this time, but closer to our home, in the Pyrénées.<br />

The choice : LFNQ - Mont Louis la Quillanne, a quite specific airfield. It is located on east side of Pyrénées very close to spanish border in Catalunya (20km from La Cerdanya), on top of "col de la Quillanne" pass.<br />

One clear interest relates for the nice environement for family activities. There are numerous things to do, like hiking, going to local Zoo, visiting castles (this is a border area...) or bathing in thermal springs. And for sure, an airfield is always a nice place to run and play, providing some ground rules are set !<br />

Another good point : accomodation sits directly on the airfield ! Take off & landing can be spotted from the house...<br />

LFNQ is sitting as high as 1700m (~FL056 QNH) (!), but with a 1100m confortable grass strip. QFU is either downhill & tailwind for moderate to medium breaze, either uphill when north wing is installed (with some local rotor & dowdraft). <br />Luckily towing A/C is a typical Morane 894 Rallye with a 235hp engine, that is big engine allows
to have a good safety margin when taking off, even with two seaters. <br />

On the other hand, landing is always uphill, with the altitude effect & tailwind more than 140kph ground speed in flare is common ! Still with a quite soft 1100m grass strip, there is quite some room for breaking... <br />

A new area to learn, a new range of summit name to memorize... And sometimes, local name does not fit with wht is written on maps ! This kind of workload means not so many photos, sadly...<br />
<br />Having learnt new areass, I came to the point to make the link with the parts I know when flying from Jaca, on the west part of Pyrénées. Once Aneto was reached, I could almost have flown with the eyes closed... Still flying from the east changes the perspective, and I tried some new ridges & peaks, going further north into Luchon area.<br />

At the end of the stay, weather was so good that I could use all this new knowledge and fly quite far west, as far as Jaca surroundings. Longer flight was crossing more or less 2/3 of the chain with ceiling around 4000m, 230km away from LFNQ - I wish I hadn't forgotten my oxygen at home... <br />

In term of big flight, weather was somehow choppy, still at the end of the stay it has improved & reasonnably nice flights were possible, to le Verdon or Les écrins.<br />

Helios was really a good choice. Amazing to see how are made those new DLG, and flying is superb !<br />
Modern 2.4GHz radioset also now goes with downlink as a basis, that is you can have altimeter & variometer reading on the screen, and sound into an earplug !<br />

I have indeed baught the Butterfly "dream vario". It is very well built, installation of the sensor box requires some care... I will hopefully see in flight how this piece of technology is robust, and actually bring something to my flight technic !<br />
I just hope I won't miss too much the 303 interface for simple but efficient navigation... <br />

The objective was to visualize flow separation in the root of LS6 glider.</div>
<br />
Result : flow in wing fuselage junction is sensitive to aoa & aileron:flap deflection.<br />
It can be observed in stall : <br />
Separation occurs at lower fuselage attitude when flap increase. Tip :
visualize this by looking at tail position vs horizon when separation
appears.<br />
It can be observed in normal flight : <br />
In straight flight, separation is not visible. Very slight tuft activity on the fuselage sides.<br />
While circling, separation occurs quite often, particularly on the wing
inside turn. This is likely driven by the additionnal aerodynamic load
brought by aileron offset ut of the turn to keep bank angle.<br />
<br />
Next time : <br />
Tufts should be applied on both sides It could be interesting to pull some G's to see what happens</div>

This is the result of numerical investigation filtered by the "TAR"* method. For sure your marvelous onboard computer knows better...<br />

The objective is to provide <u>simple figures</u>, <u>easy to memorize</u>, per family of glider (Club class/15m/18m/20m/unlimited), to be used with "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_to_fly">Standart Mc Cready ring</a>" (like the good old time).<br />
<br />

Example : today I fill my LS6 with 80L of water. I should consider increasing by 0.4m/s my McCready setting due this additional wing loading - on top of other setting (80/100*0.5m/s=0.4m/s) <br />
<br />
Don't hesitate to use this "enhanced rule of thumb" !<br />
<br />
(& keep in mind it is always more efficient to have a McCready setting "a bit too less" than "a bit too much"...)<br />
